MANILA, CA - On Wednesday, April 17 at 7:58 A.M., the Arcata Fire District was dispatched to a residential structure fire on the 2000 block of Darin Road.

The first of AFD’s engines arrived on scene to find a one-story multi-family home with smoke coming out of the eaves. The second AFD engine arrived and both engine companies began traversing the property to gain entrance to the residence.

Once they got in the building, firefighters worked to locate the source of the smoke.

Engineer Ryan Dixon and Captain Brandon Johnson proceeded to use a ladder to get onto the roof. Using thermal imaging technology, they located a hotspot. They began venting the roof with a chainsaw and found a small smoldering fire in the attic space above the kitchen.

After several minutes venting the fire from the roof, interior crews began removing ceiling in the kitchen to extinguish the remainder of the fire.

Arcata Fire District would like to thank Samoa Peninsula Fire District for responding, and Blue Lake Fire District and Westhaven Volunteer Fire Department for covering AFD’s stations during the call.
