The Arcata Fire District is currently accepting applications for the position of:

Lateral Entry Engineer/Firefighter - 1 Position

Receives direct supervision from the Fire Captain position. The position serves a dual role as an apparatus operator that drives fire apparatus to calls for service and carries out the firefighter duties as a member of the engine company. The Engineer/Firefighter position maintains facilities and equipment for maximum efficiency. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Has the ability to maintain firefighting apparatus and other emergency response vehicles and equipment to ensure all apparatus, tools, and other related equipment are in good working order for any emergency situation. Possesses strong communication skills, both oral and written, that ensure the candidate can maintain effective working relationships. Experience with the principles, practices, and techniques of fire suppression, containment, rescue, cleanup, salvage, and emergency medical care. Knowledge of the applied techniques of driving varied emergency vehicles and operating a wide range of fire equipment and apparatus, fire ground hydraulics, hazardous materials response, familiarity with public relations response, and customer service.


  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) 
  • Two (2) years of continuous fire suppression experience with at least one (1) year of full-time paid experience OR two (2) years of volunteer experience, as a driver/operator.
  • CSFM FF I or equivalent
  • EMT-I
  • Valid insurable driver’s license with firefighting endorsement
  • Hazmat First Responder Awareness
  • ICS-200 NIMS 700/800
  • Prior to completion of probation, must obtain NWCG FF1 and complete the CSFM Driver Operator 1A & 1B certification

The annual salary range is $58,884.00 - $74,136.00. Actual salary will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. Longevity pay for continuous and uninterrupted full-time paid service will be applied. New employees may be placed in a salary step above step 1 depending on qualifications and experience. Newly hired employees may also have up to 10 years of full-time paid fire service experience recognized and counted towards longevity pay.
